Forestry Mulching in Central Indiana
Forestry mulching is part of what we offer today. Because every property is different, we won't publish generic tree-size limits, production rates or per-acre prices — that would only be a guess. We quote it after walking your ground.

The short answer
Forestry mulching grinds standing brush, saplings and small trees into a mulch layer that stays on the ground instead of being piled, burned or trucked away. Mann Excavation & Sitework offers forestry mulching now across Central Indiana, alongside conventional land clearing, brush removal, stump and grubbing work and site prep. We also offer conventional clearing with the same fleet: pushing and piling brush, pulling stumps, grubbing roots, rough grading and loading debris out. Which approach fits your property depends on what the ground has to do afterward.
What forestry mulching actually is
A forestry mulching head is a rotating drum with cutting teeth, carried on a compact track loader or excavator. It cuts standing vegetation and grinds it where it stands, leaving chipped wood and brush spread across the ground rather than in a pile.
The practical difference from conventional clearing is what happens to the material. Conventional clearing separates the job into cutting, piling and trucking it away; mulching converts the vegetation into ground cover on site, so there is no burn pile and usually nothing to truck away.
That trade-off cuts both ways. Mulching leaves root systems in the ground and leaves a mulch layer you may not want; conventional clearing takes the material away and can take the stumps with it. Which one fits depends on what the ground has to do next.
When forestry mulching is the right call — and when it isn't
Good fit
- Knocking down overgrown brush, saplings and invasive growth so a property can be walked, mowed or looked at
- Opening trails, lanes and access routes through wooded ground
- Thinning growth where you want to keep the mature trees standing
- Reclaiming ground where the roots can stay put and the mulch layer is fine to leave
- Work near ditches, banks or thin soil where you want to limit bare exposed dirt
Not the right tool
- • Building pads, driveway lines, footings or anywhere stumps and roots must come out — that is excavator work
- • Ground you intend to till, plow or finish-grade soon after clearing
- • Large mature timber, which has to be felled and handled conventionally
- • Sites where the material has to leave the property rather than stay as mulch

How the work goes
- 1
Call or send the form
Tell us the property, the acreage or footage, and what the ground has to do afterwards. We'll tell you plainly whether mulching or conventional clearing fits better.
- 2
Free on-site walkthrough
We walk the parcel with you, look at density, slope, access, wet spots and anything to protect, and mark what stays.
- 3
Written per-project estimate
Priced for your property after the walkthrough — we don't quote clearing or mulching off a satellite photo.
- 4
Schedule and clear
We work around ground conditions and weather, and walk the finished property with you before we leave.
What to expect on the ground
- Stumps: mulching grinds vegetation at or near ground level and does not remove root systems. If you need stumps out — for a building pad, a driveway line or a field you intend to till — that is excavator work and we quote it separately.
- What's left on the ground: mulched material stays on site as a layer of chipped wood and brush. It is not a finished landscape surface; expect to seed, grade or let it break down depending on how the ground will be used.
- Conventional clearing instead leaves brush and stumps to be piled and loaded out. We remove that debris in our dump truck when the job calls for it.
- Access and site conditions: machine width, gate openings, slopes, soft ground and standing water all affect what can be done and when. We check these during the walkthrough rather than guessing from a map.
- Utilities: we ask you to have Indiana 811 locates marked before any digging, grubbing or stump work, and we mark septic fields, wells, lines and anything you want protected before we start.
- Soil and erosion: clearing exposes soil. On slopes and near ditches or waterways we talk through seeding, grading or leaving vegetation in place, and we follow any local permit or drainage rules that apply to your parcel.
What your estimate depends on
Every parcel is different, so we price per project after walking it. We don't publish per-acre or day rates for work we haven't quoted — these are the things that actually move the number:
- Acreage or linear footage, and how much of the parcel actually needs clearing
- Vegetation density and the size of what is standing — thin saplings behave very differently from mature growth
- Whether stumps and roots have to come out, or the ground only needs to be knocked down
- Whether debris stays on site or gets loaded out and disposed of
- Access, slope, ground moisture and anything on the property that has to be protected
- Follow-up work you want bundled in — grading, drainage, gravel or a building pad
Clearing methods for your property
Forestry mulching, land clearing, brush removal and site prep are available now. We assess the approach and equipment access during the walkthrough.
- Forestry mulching — reduces standing brush, saplings and small trees to a mulch layer left on site
- Excavator — stump and root removal, grubbing, ditch and drainage work, reshaping ground after clearing
- Skid steer / compact track loader — pushing and piling brush, grading, moving material around the site
- Dump truck — moving cleared debris and spoil off the property when a job calls for it
How it works together
Forestry mulching is offered alongside the excavator, skid steer and dump truck work we already do — so mulching, clearing, stump work, grading and drainage can happen under one contractor.
We won't publish tree-size limits, per-acre production rates, or mulching prices as generic numbers — every property is different, and we quote it after walking your ground.
