Land Clearing in Central Indiana

Conventional land clearing is the work we do today, with machines already in our fleet. We push and pull standing growth, pull stumps and grub roots, load debris into our dump truck and leave the ground roughed in or graded, depending on what it has to do next.

The short answer

Land clearing removes trees, brush, stumps and vegetation so a property can be built on, farmed, mowed or sold. Mann Excavation & Sitework clears lots and acreage across Central Indiana with an excavator, skid steer and dump truck — including stumps and debris removal, which mulching does not do. Because we also do the excavation that follows — grading, drainage, gravel, building pads — the clearing is done with the next stage in mind instead of handing you a site someone else has to fix.

What conventional land clearing includes

Clearing is a sequence, not a single pass. Standing growth comes down, stumps and roots are pulled where they matter, the material is piled, and the pile is loaded out or disposed of. The ground is then left rough or graded to a usable surface.

The advantage over mulching is finality: the material leaves, and so do the stumps. If the ground is going to carry a structure, a driveway, a pad or a plough, that matters.

The trade-off is disturbance and disposal. Pulling roots turns up soil, and loading debris out adds truck time. We tell you where that cost lands before we start.

When land clearing is the right call — and when it isn't

Good fit

  • Lots and acreage being prepared for building, a pad or a driveway
  • Ground that will be tilled, seeded or finish-graded
  • Properties where stumps and root balls have to come out
  • Sites where the debris must leave rather than stay on the ground
  • Storm damage and downed timber that needs loading and removal
  • Overgrown parcels being cleaned up for sale or for mowing

Not the right tool

  • • Selective thinning where you want to keep most standing trees untouched
  • • Jobs where you specifically want the vegetation left on site as mulch cover
  • • Steep or fragile ground where you're trying to avoid exposing soil
  • • Large mature timber harvests, which are a logging contractor's job

Typical land clearing projects

Building lot and pole barn site clearing
Overgrown acreage and backyard reclamation
Field edge and ditch line cleanup
Stump and root removal after tree work
Storm cleanup and debris removal
Clearing ahead of a driveway or culvert install

How the work goes

  1. 1

    Site walk

We walk the parcel, confirm scope, mark what stays, check access and slope, and ask you to have Indiana 811 locates marked.

  2. 2

    Per-project estimate

Priced after the walkthrough based on acreage, density, stumps and disposal — not from a map.

  3. 3

    Clear and grub

Excavator and skid steer take down growth, pull stumps and grub roots where the next use requires it.

  4. 4

    Load out and grade

Debris goes into the dump truck and off the property; the ground is left rough or graded to suit what comes next.

What to expect on the ground

  • Stumps: mulching grinds vegetation at or near ground level and does not remove root systems. If you need stumps out — for a building pad, a driveway line or a field you intend to till — that is excavator work and we quote it separately.
  • What's left on the ground: mulched material stays on site as a layer of chipped wood and brush. It is not a finished landscape surface; expect to seed, grade or let it break down depending on how the ground will be used.
  • Conventional clearing instead leaves brush and stumps to be piled and loaded out. We remove that debris in our dump truck when the job calls for it.
  • Access and site conditions: machine width, gate openings, slopes, soft ground and standing water all affect what can be done and when. We check these during the walkthrough rather than guessing from a map.
  • Utilities: we ask you to have Indiana 811 locates marked before any digging, grubbing or stump work, and we mark septic fields, wells, lines and anything you want protected before we start.
  • Soil and erosion: clearing exposes soil. On slopes and near ditches or waterways we talk through seeding, grading or leaving vegetation in place, and we follow any local permit or drainage rules that apply to your parcel.

What your estimate depends on

Every parcel is different, so we price per project after walking it. We don't publish per-acre or day rates for work we haven't quoted — these are the things that actually move the number:

  • Acreage or linear footage, and how much of the parcel actually needs clearing
  • Vegetation density and the size of what is standing — thin saplings behave very differently from mature growth
  • Whether stumps and roots have to come out, or the ground only needs to be knocked down
  • Whether debris stays on site or gets loaded out and disposed of
  • Access, slope, ground moisture and anything on the property that has to be protected
  • Follow-up work you want bundled in — grading, drainage, gravel or a building pad

Clearing methods for your property

Forestry mulching, land clearing, brush removal and site prep are available now. We assess the approach and equipment access during the walkthrough.

  • Forestry mulching — reduces standing brush, saplings and small trees to a mulch layer left on site
  • Excavator — stump and root removal, grubbing, ditch and drainage work, reshaping ground after clearing
  • Skid steer / compact track loader — pushing and piling brush, grading, moving material around the site
  • Dump truck — moving cleared debris and spoil off the property when a job calls for it

How it works together

Forestry mulching is offered alongside the excavator, skid steer and dump truck work we already do — so mulching, clearing, stump work, grading and drainage can happen under one contractor.

We won't publish tree-size limits, per-acre production rates, or mulching prices as generic numbers — every property is different, and we quote it after walking your ground.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Conventional land clearing, brush removal, stump and grubbing work and debris removal are available now with the equipment already in our fleet.

Yes, when the next use of the ground requires it. We pull stumps and grub roots with the excavator rather than leaving them to rot in place.

It's piled and loaded into our dump truck and removed from the property. We don't leave burn piles behind unless you ask us to.

It's priced per project after a free on-site walkthrough. Acreage, density, whether stumps come out and whether debris leaves the site all change the number, so we don't publish a per-acre rate.

It depends on your county, the parcel and whether drainage or waterways are involved. We'll tell you what we know and point you at the right office; see our Indiana land clearing permit guide.

Yes. Grading, drainage, culverts, gravel driveways and building pads are all work we do, so the site can go from overgrown to usable in one project.
