Trail & Access Clearing in Central Indiana

A trail is more than a cut line through brush. If water runs down it, it becomes a ditch; if the stumps stay, it stays rough. We clear the route, take out what would catch a tyre or an axle, and shape it so water leaves the trail instead of following it.

The short answer

Trail clearing cuts a usable route through wooded or overgrown ground — for walking, ATVs, equipment or getting to the back of a property. Mann Excavation & Sitework cuts and grubs trails across Central Indiana with a skid steer and excavator, and can shape and drain the route so it stays passable. Available now. Routes can be cut for walking, ATVs and side-by-sides, or wide and firm enough for a truck or equipment to reach the back of a parcel.

What trail clearing involves

We agree the route on the ground first — where it runs, how wide, how much canopy comes out and what stays. Then the growth in the corridor comes down, and stumps and roots in the travel path get pulled.

Where the trail crosses a slope or a low spot, the fix is drainage rather than more clearing: shaping the surface, cutting a crown or a grade break, adding stone in a soft section, or setting a crossing where water needs to pass under.

Trails through soft or wet ground are a judgement call. We'd rather move the route than build a trail that turns into a rut every spring.

When trail and access clearing is the right call — and when it isn't

Good fit

  • Walking, hiking and ATV routes through wooded property
  • Equipment and truck access to the back of a parcel
  • Connecting fields, stands or outbuildings across acreage
  • Reopening an old lane that's grown shut
  • Routes that need shaping and drainage, not just cutting

Not the right tool

  • • Engineered or public-use trail systems requiring design and permitting
  • • Paved or fully surfaced roads
  • • Routes across wetlands or regulated waterways without the right approvals
  • • Anywhere the ground stays saturated year-round

Typical trail and access clearing projects

ATV and side-by-side trails
Walking and hunting access paths
Equipment lanes to back fields
Reopening overgrown farm lanes
Trail drainage and low-spot repair
Stone on soft trail sections

How the work goes

  1. 1

    Walk the route

We walk it with you, flag the line, agree the width, and note low spots, crossings, slopes and trees to keep.

  2. 2

    Estimate

Priced per project by length, width, density and how much shaping or stone the route needs.

  3. 3

    Cut and grub

Growth in the corridor comes down; stumps and roots in the travel path are pulled so the surface is usable.

  4. 4

    Shape and drain

The route is graded, water is given somewhere to go, and soft sections get stone if needed.

What to expect on the ground

  • Stumps: mulching grinds vegetation at or near ground level and does not remove root systems. If you need stumps out — for a building pad, a driveway line or a field you intend to till — that is excavator work and we quote it separately.
  • What's left on the ground: mulched material stays on site as a layer of chipped wood and brush. It is not a finished landscape surface; expect to seed, grade or let it break down depending on how the ground will be used.
  • Conventional clearing instead leaves brush and stumps to be piled and loaded out. We remove that debris in our dump truck when the job calls for it.
  • Access and site conditions: machine width, gate openings, slopes, soft ground and standing water all affect what can be done and when. We check these during the walkthrough rather than guessing from a map.
  • Utilities: we ask you to have Indiana 811 locates marked before any digging, grubbing or stump work, and we mark septic fields, wells, lines and anything you want protected before we start.
  • Soil and erosion: clearing exposes soil. On slopes and near ditches or waterways we talk through seeding, grading or leaving vegetation in place, and we follow any local permit or drainage rules that apply to your parcel.

What your estimate depends on

Every parcel is different, so we price per project after walking it. We don't publish per-acre or day rates for work we haven't quoted — these are the things that actually move the number:

  • Acreage or linear footage, and how much of the parcel actually needs clearing
  • Vegetation density and the size of what is standing — thin saplings behave very differently from mature growth
  • Whether stumps and roots have to come out, or the ground only needs to be knocked down
  • Whether debris stays on site or gets loaded out and disposed of
  • Access, slope, ground moisture and anything on the property that has to be protected
  • Follow-up work you want bundled in — grading, drainage, gravel or a building pad

Clearing methods for your property

Forestry mulching, land clearing, brush removal and site prep are available now. We assess the approach and equipment access during the walkthrough.

  • Forestry mulching — reduces standing brush, saplings and small trees to a mulch layer left on site
  • Excavator — stump and root removal, grubbing, ditch and drainage work, reshaping ground after clearing
  • Skid steer / compact track loader — pushing and piling brush, grading, moving material around the site
  • Dump truck — moving cleared debris and spoil off the property when a job calls for it

How it works together

Forestry mulching is offered alongside the excavator, skid steer and dump truck work we already do — so mulching, clearing, stump work, grading and drainage can happen under one contractor.

We won't publish tree-size limits, per-acre production rates, or mulching prices as generic numbers — every property is different, and we quote it after walking your ground.

Frequently asked questions

A walking path can be narrow; an ATV route usually wants enough width to pass comfortably; equipment access needs more again. We agree the width on site before anything comes down.

Yes, in the travel path. Leaving them makes a trail that damages tyres and machines.

Not if water is given somewhere to go. Shaping, grade breaks and stone on soft sections are part of the work where the route needs them.

Sometimes, with a proper crossing or culvert. Sometimes the honest answer is to move the route. We'll say which on the walkthrough.

This trail-clearing service is conventional clearing, with the debris removed. If you'd rather leave the material on site as mulch, ask about forestry mulching instead.

Per project, after a free on-site walk of the route. Length, width, density and drainage work are the main factors.
