Retaining Wall Installation & Repair in Central Indiana

Holding back a grade in Indiana clay takes more than stacking block. Mann Excavation & Sitework builds block and boulder retaining walls on a compacted stone base with drainage behind them, and rebuilds walls that were not — across Danville, Avon, Brownsburg, Plainfield, and Central Indiana.

What We Build

Segmental block retaining walls
Boulder and armor stone walls
Driveway and culvert head walls
Walk-out basement and patio walls
Slope and erosion control walls
Tear-out and rebuild of failing walls

How We Build a Wall That Stays Put

Read the grade and the water

Where the water comes from matters more than the block. We look at the slope above and below the wall and where runoff needs to go.

Excavate and compact the base

The trench is cut below grade and a compacted stone base is set level — this is what keeps a wall from settling and leaning.

Set the block or stone

Courses are laid level, stepped back or battered into the hill, and locked to the design height.

Drainage behind the wall

Clean drainage stone and a drain line behind the wall give water somewhere to go instead of pushing on the face.

Backfill and finish grade

Backfill is placed in lifts and the area above and below is graded so runoff moves past the wall, not into it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Segmental block and boulder walls for grade changes around driveways, walk-outs, patios, ponds, and eroding slopes. We handle the excavation, base, drainage, and backfill that make the wall last.

Almost always water and base. Central Indiana clay holds water, and a wall built without a compacted stone base, drainage stone behind it, and a drain outlet will lean, bulge, or push out over a few freeze-thaw cycles.

Many Indiana jurisdictions require a permit and engineering above a certain height — often around four feet — and rules differ by county and town. Check with your local building department; for taller or load-bearing walls we will tell you when an engineer needs to be involved.

Yes. We tear out failing timber, block, or stone walls, fix the drainage problem behind them, and rebuild on a proper base.

It depends on wall height and length, block or boulder choice, how much excavation and stone the base needs, and site access. Call 317-206-0414 for an on-site look and a real number.
