Pasture Reclamation in Central Indiana

A field left a few seasons grows saplings and briars; left longer, it grows trees. Getting it back to pasture means more than knocking the growth over — the stumps and roots have to come out if a mower or a drill is ever going over that ground.

The short answer

Pasture reclamation brings a field that's grown up in brush and saplings back to ground you can mow, seed and graze. Mann Excavation & Sitework clears and grubs overgrown pasture across Central Indiana with an excavator and skid steer, removes the debris, and can rough grade and improve drainage before you reseed. We clear it, grub the root systems, load the debris out, and leave the field rough-graded so you can seed it. Wet corners and drainage problems that helped it get overgrown can be dealt with at the same time.

What reclaiming a pasture involves

First the standing growth comes down and is piled. Then the roots: anything that would stop a mower, a disc or a drill has to be pulled rather than cut, or you'll be fighting it every year.

Debris is loaded out in the dump truck. The field is then rough-graded — filling the holes the stumps left, smoothing ruts, and taking out the worst of the unevenness so the ground is safe to drive a tractor across.

Seeding and soil work are yours or your agronomist's call. We'll tell you where the ground stays wet and what a drainage fix would involve, but we don't sell seed or make yield claims.

When pasture reclamation is the right call — and when it isn't

Good fit

  • Fields grown up in brush, briars and saplings
  • Paddocks being brought back into grazing use
  • Hay ground that needs the tree line pushed back
  • Fields with stumps that stop a mower or a drill
  • Ground where wet spots are part of why it went unused

Not the right tool

  • • Established woodland you intend to keep as woodland
  • • Fields that only need mowing or bush-hogging
  • • Soil testing, seeding and agronomy services
  • • Ground in a wetland or drainage easement without the right approvals

Typical pasture reclamation projects

Overgrown pasture and paddock clearing
Tree line pushback on hay ground
Stump and root grubbing across fields
Rough grading before reseeding
Wet spot and drainage improvement
Debris removal from long-neglected acreage

How the work goes

  1. 1

    Field walk

We walk the field, look at density, stumps, wet areas, access and what you plan to do with the ground afterwards.

  2. 2

    Estimate

Per project after the walk — acreage, density, how much grubbing is needed and where the debris goes.

  3. 3

    Clear and grub

Growth down, stumps and roots pulled so a mower or drill can safely work the field.

  4. 4

    Load out and rough grade

Debris removed, stump holes filled, ruts smoothed, and the field left ready for you to seed.

What to expect on the ground

  • Stumps: mulching grinds vegetation at or near ground level and does not remove root systems. If you need stumps out — for a building pad, a driveway line or a field you intend to till — that is excavator work and we quote it separately.
  • What's left on the ground: mulched material stays on site as a layer of chipped wood and brush. It is not a finished landscape surface; expect to seed, grade or let it break down depending on how the ground will be used.
  • Conventional clearing instead leaves brush and stumps to be piled and loaded out. We remove that debris in our dump truck when the job calls for it.
  • Access and site conditions: machine width, gate openings, slopes, soft ground and standing water all affect what can be done and when. We check these during the walkthrough rather than guessing from a map.
  • Utilities: we ask you to have Indiana 811 locates marked before any digging, grubbing or stump work, and we mark septic fields, wells, lines and anything you want protected before we start.
  • Soil and erosion: clearing exposes soil. On slopes and near ditches or waterways we talk through seeding, grading or leaving vegetation in place, and we follow any local permit or drainage rules that apply to your parcel.

What your estimate depends on

Every parcel is different, so we price per project after walking it. We don't publish per-acre or day rates for work we haven't quoted — these are the things that actually move the number:

  • Acreage or linear footage, and how much of the parcel actually needs clearing
  • Vegetation density and the size of what is standing — thin saplings behave very differently from mature growth
  • Whether stumps and roots have to come out, or the ground only needs to be knocked down
  • Whether debris stays on site or gets loaded out and disposed of
  • Access, slope, ground moisture and anything on the property that has to be protected
  • Follow-up work you want bundled in — grading, drainage, gravel or a building pad

Clearing methods for your property

Forestry mulching, land clearing, brush removal and site prep are available now. We assess the approach and equipment access during the walkthrough.

  • Forestry mulching — reduces standing brush, saplings and small trees to a mulch layer left on site
  • Excavator — stump and root removal, grubbing, ditch and drainage work, reshaping ground after clearing
  • Skid steer / compact track loader — pushing and piling brush, grading, moving material around the site
  • Dump truck — moving cleared debris and spoil off the property when a job calls for it

How it works together

Forestry mulching is offered alongside the excavator, skid steer and dump truck work we already do — so mulching, clearing, stump work, grading and drainage can happen under one contractor.

We won't publish tree-size limits, per-acre production rates, or mulching prices as generic numbers — every property is different, and we quote it after walking your ground.

Frequently asked questions

If a mower, disc or drill is going over the ground, yes. Cut-off stumps damage equipment and the growth returns. We pull them with the excavator.

It'll be cleared, grubbed and rough-graded. Final seedbed prep, soil testing and seeding are yours or your agronomist's call — we don't make yield claims.

Often. Drainage, shaping and tile work are things we do. We'll tell you on the walkthrough whether it's a straightforward fix or a bigger project.

Cleared, with debris removed, so a mower or drill can safely work the ground. We also offer forestry mulching if the roots can stay in place.

Per project, after a free on-site walkthrough. Acreage, density, how much grubbing is needed and disposal drive the number.

It depends entirely on acreage and how heavy the growth is. We give you a realistic window after walking the field, not before.
