Gravel Driveway Stone Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate how much crushed stone a gravel driveway needs, in cubic yards and tons. It is a planning tool for driveways we build, repair and resurface across Hendricks, Morgan and Boone counties — not an order form. We install the stone as part of the driveway work; we do not sell stone on its own.
Estimate your driveway
Estimates use 1.4 tons per cubic yard for compacted Indiana crushed limestone and do not include subgrade prep, drainage, geotextile fabric or compaction. This is a planning estimate, not a quote.
How the math works
Square feet equals length times width. Multiply that by the stone depth in feet (inches divided by 12) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. Crushed limestone compacts at roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, so multiply cubic yards by 1.4 for tonnage. A typical 100 ft by 12 ft residential driveway at 4 inches works out to about 14.8 cubic yards, or roughly 20.7 tons.
How deep on Indiana clay
- New driveway: 6–8 inches of compacted base, then a 2–3 inch surface course.
- Resurfacing: 3–4 inches over a stable, properly crowned existing drive.
- Soft or wet subgrade: excavate the soft material, add geotextile fabric, then build back up — adding stone on top of mud never lasts.
- Heavy truck or equipment traffic: 8 inches or more of base, with drainage handled first.
Common questions
- How much stone does a gravel driveway need?
- Multiply length by width to get square feet, multiply by the depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. Crushed limestone weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, so a 100 ft by 12 ft driveway at 4 inches deep needs about 14.8 cubic yards, or about 20.7 tons.
- How deep should a gravel driveway be in Indiana?
- A new driveway on Indiana clay usually needs 6 to 8 inches of compacted base stone with a 2 to 3 inch surface layer on top. Resurfacing an existing, stable driveway typically takes 3 to 4 inches.
- Is this estimate a quote?
- No. It is a planning estimate only. Real driveways need subgrade prep, drainage, crown and compaction, and the ground conditions change the numbers. Call 317-206-0414 for a real quote.
Want a real number?
Tonnage is only part of a driveway. Call 317-206-0414 and we will look at the subgrade, drainage and access before quoting the job.
